The Promethean Song, The River').

Du kannst drei Dinge an unserem Heimatland Deutschland loben:

ENGLISH

Your last record "One For Sorrow" was published two and a half years ago. Have there been any changes till now?

Hello. To start this humble, I think the biggest change after “One For Sorrow” is myself, haha. As guys asked me to join the band right after that album I did all the touring for that album cycle and this new album is the first album where I’m included on the album and as a songwriter. Past 2,5 have been awesome and I’ve been happy to notice that many things have gone really fast forward and the band have grown a lot, of course we did lots an’ lots of touring in support for the “One For Sorrow” album in the three corners of the world. Stylewisely speaking, the new album is still that good ol’ trademarked Insomnium but there’s a lot new spices between the lines and we’re confident to say that this is the most diverse and multifaceted album Insomnium have done yet. So it’s definitely not a boring one.

Your new album is titled "Shadows Of The Dying Sun" (V.Ö. 25.04.2014). Why this title?

We’re nothing but shadows of the dying sun and dust of the stars, not so good future in sight, hehe. We snapped the name from the song title, and from the songtitles it described this chapter the best way…

Your music sounds more intense and darker. What is the reason for that?

I don’t agree that this is especially darker album than previous ones, but more intense definitely. There’s included that northern melancholy that’s running in our veins, but I surely think that there’s many glimpses of hope also on the music. It’s not all only darkness and death everyday here.

What makes the new album very special?

We really gave it our best shot, so that makes the album special at least for ourselves. It have a honest heart and soul on it, among the overdose of released metal albums in the nowadays world it might be something rare. It also paints the Finnish landscapes and mentality pretty well for the music.

Which is your favorite song of the album? Why?

I really love the intro song, Primeval Dark. It’s majestic, growing and rhythmically something new in Insomnium camp. Promethean Song is also one I really like, it’s melancholic but hopeful and really Finnish, and I have too really good memories about the song when we arranged it on some backstage during our European tour with Moonspell last year.

What are the songs about? Are there any topics or things you are never going to write a song about?

Lots of lyrics are sailing on the deep waters, like relationships crashing down, your close ones struggling and dying, but on the other hand there’s also lots of surviving and hope. Niilo inspires himself a lot with literature and writes from there, as Ville inspires himself with his own life. Well if I hope something lyricwise, it’s that we won’t never write any political or religious songs!

My impression is that there are more clear vocals on the album (f.e. in 'The Promethean Song, The River'). Would you enlarge the intensity of the songs by using bigger contrasts?

At the same time with the increased a bit the amount of clean vocals, there’s also more aggressive stuff than Insomnium have ever done, like blast beats and some flirting with black metal too! Contrasts are what makes heavy parts more heavier and mellow parts more mellow If death metal band plays on ten always, then it’s not so heavy anymore as your ears get bored and used to it. We listen to music on large scale and like really different kinds of stuff, from black metal to folklore and electro, so it’s natural that there’s also diversity on our own music. There’s more clean vocals than before, on the 5 songs out of 11, but the main point is still on the growling vox and there’s still more of ‘em. But cleans bring good spices on top, and on this album we gave a lot more time for producing the clean vocals and it can really be heard. Ville is shining!

Is there any album, song or band that changes your life?

Many of ‘em of course. But I think the biggest life changing album for me was “The Final Countdown” by Europe, as it was the first rock album that I loved when I was something like 5 or 6 years old, and since then the path was chosen and I wanted to be rock dude! After Kiss “Animalize live” video I decided that I wanna be a guitar hero. Then on the otherhand “Spiritual Healing” by Death sunk me to the depths of death metal.

Are there any German bands that influence your music or that you hear privately?

The Scorpions of course, haha! I used to love Kreator a lot also back in the day, as also Bonfire when I was really really young. I also had a Rammstein era in my life in the 90’s (who didn’t?) but nowadays I cannot listen that band at all…

You can recommend three things from our home country Germany:

That’s easily Ein Fall Für Zwei, Derrick and Der Alte! Yes, I used to be heavily influenced by German police series, more than music, haha!

Are there any developments in the metal scene you don't agree with?

I have to admit I’m more the old school guy nowadays when it comes to metal, and music overall. I haven’t found many new good metal bands. Well, Architects is one of them definitely, and a “new band” called Vallenfyre! Maybe i should explore more new metal really…

Thank you for the interview
